INSIDE THE BOX

Lyrical diptych for Soprano, Baritone and Orchestra

“IN THE WOOD OF THE NIGHT”

CONCEPT: Can contemporary reality restrict our way of choosing?

Inspired by the famous drama “Bodas de Sangre” by F. Garcia Lorca, this opera tells the story of two lovers who can’t be together because of the imminent marriage of her. So they decide to run away (on the wedding day) in the nearby wood. There they will be found by the bridegroom and killed.

The event is described by a narrator that comes on the scena as the old bards used to do in the ancient times, with his lyre. On the stage there will be only a box, towards which he will head. It will be soon clear that the box becoms metaphore of that forest in which the lovers will be trapped, metaphore itself of the contemporary reality that surrounds each one of us and restricts the sphere of action and  choices by closing it inside a sort of jail, case…box.

“DRAW ME A SHEEP”

CONCEPT: Can the artistic thought restrict the pure intuition of a simple reality?

Inspired by a scene of the book “The little prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this opera is about the drama of an artist (a painter) which, facing the request of a demanding commision, is not able to find a way to satisfy it. His artistic mind is therefore paralysed by the thousand of empty words that the customer felt so necessary to write.
So it comes that the resolution lies in the most simple intuition: to draw the subject (a sheep) inside a box, so that everything is accomplished; everyone will be able to imagine it as he wants.
